img_4255Our society loves the idea of love. Especially in the Christmas season it seems as though the season is about love. The things that comes to mind most with this idea is Hallmark Movies. I know I really like Hallmark Christmas movies, they are all about love, and make you feel warm and ready for the holiday season.

There is also the fact that more people get engaged at Christmas than any other time of the year. More people want to be relationships, and desire love, than any other time of the year.

Love is all around us, and while it is a focus of the season, we are taking its focus to the wrong side of things. Yes, this season should be about love, but it should be about the love God has for his people.

The reason for this season is that God sent His son down to earth, in a miraculous way, to save His people whom He loves so much. The covenant God had with Israel in the Old Testament showed His love towards His people. But God then showed His love in an even more human way, through sending a baby boy who would live His life in love and take that love to the cross to die for our sins.

The love of God is so much bigger than any feeling of care, or affection, or protection we have for any one person around us; it is far greater than we could ever understand.

We love the idea of love, but we forget that we love because God first loved us (1 John). The only love that will truly satisfy that desire to be loved in our hearts is Jesus. The only one who can really teach us to love, and to love sacrificially is Jesus. You cannot have love without the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So, while we are coming into this Christmas season, remember that human love may fail, it may also seem to be enough, it may be a nice part of this Christmas Season. But, the reason for the season is the overwhelming, never ending, reckless love of God.
